w. e. McMillin - Artist
“My favorite color is clear”. When I discovered this, “clear” became the palette on which I create my art; my art is applied on the reverse side of glass for viewing from the front side of this “clear” medium.
I discovered the advantage of painting on the reverse side of glass out of necessity. Needing the “clear” finish to my art, prior to reverse glass painting, I would apply a clear coat to my art as a final step. I could not afford clear coat paints. I could acquire clear glass and I found that I was deeply satisfied with the viewing of my art from the front side of the glass. As an artist it was not difficult for me to imagine the final product and apply the “paints” in the reverse order so that the viewer from the front side of the glass saw the final image as I intended. I pretty much plan every square centimeter in my mind and apply the paints accordingly. |
Biography

Art has always been in my heart but I have not always been an active artist.
Born Whitney E. McMillin in May 1987. I began figure skating at the age of two when my mother took me to a “mom and tots” skate at a local skating rink. At the age of three I skated in my first competition. I skated competitively until age eighteen, competing nationally as a pair skater and a single skater. The ability of my mind to accommodate multiple choreographed programs and reverse them if needed on any sheet of ice was again natural and easy for me. When I retired from competing, professional ice shows and teaching, I was ready for a much needed break. It turned out that this planned break became an 18 hour-a-day passion for art. I started painting on anything I could find from old car parts, old boards, veneer woods and finally settled on my current passion for glass because "clear" is my favorite color. I had been applying an expensive clear coat to my art to give it the look I wanted. With clear glass in the foreground of my art, the expensive clear coat is not needed. My reverse glass work will continue to evolve as I experiment with paints, making my own when necessary, and experiment with the interaction of light with my art. |
